The School for Moral Ambition, co-founded by industry leaders, including best-selling author Rutger Bregman, is dedicated to a simple conviction: the most talented people should work on the most important global problems. We need our brightest minds to safeguard our democracies, make pandemics history, end factory farming and ensure that technological advancements benefit society.

Our mission is to inspire and equip individuals to pursue morally ambitious goals. We are launching a groundbreaking book, Moral Ambition, in the US and UK, and expanding our non-profit foundation across the US and globally.

about the role

We are seeking an experienced and energetic CEO to lead the US launch and global expansion of SMA. Responsibilities include setting foundation strategy, building and managing a team, leveraging the book launch, fundraising, and overseeing P&L.

The ideal candidate is a proven builder with excellent communication skills and a proactive approach. This role offers the chance to drive a global movement, collaborate with high-profile ambassadors, and foster an enthusiastic and impactful work environment.

Key responsibilities

  1. Set the overall US strategy for The School for Moral Ambition. You will determine the strategy to maximize the impact of SMA in North America, set the overall Theory of Change, OKRs, monitor progress and develop a strategic learning agenda.
  2. Build and Manage the Team: You will be responsible for the recruitment of the rest of the US team, the first employees and an exceptional non-profit Board of Directors.
  3. Run the Campaign in North America: Collaborate closely with a Campaign Director and Rutger to develop and execute a comprehensive US campaign plan; ensuring alignment with goals and creative vision.
  4. Leverage the Book Launch: Leverage the momentum of the book launch and campaign to effectively build the brand, in collaboration with a campaign leader and ensure programs are prepared to channel talent towards addressing the largest global challenges.
  5. Fundraising: We need a real builder in order to build up partnerships with major philanthropists and foundations.
  6. P&L: Responsible for overall P&L and resource allocation.
  7. Liaising with the EU Team: You will collaborate with the EU team based in the Netherlands to exchange best practices.

What We’re looking for

  • An extraordinary builder; having started one or multiple organizations under high time pressure. We should be ready to channel top talent and capital from ambitious philanthropists to the most important global challenges around the time of the Moral Ambition book launch around May 2025.
  • Great communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Creative strategic abilities and a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Alignment with Moral Ambition and our founding principles.
  • A strong network of potential funders, collaborators and ambassadors.

What we offer

  • An amazing opportunity to kickstart a global movement of ambitious idealists.
  • The freedom to determine the course of SMA in North America within the boundaries of our founding principles.
  • A competitive salary (USD 200k-250k per year), comprehensive healthcare coverage, and other employee benefits in line with non-profit industry standards.
  • A close partnership with Rutger Bregman and a network of high profile ambassadors (well-known politicians, entrepreneurs and activists).
  • A whole lot of fun. As we’ve tried to convey in our founding principles: ‘We’re not driven by feelings of guilt, but by sheer enthusiasm. We’re simply excited about making the world a wildly better place, and about building a legacy that matters.’
